Overview

Little is taught to the NP about business since the focus is on clinical skill mastery. NPs are a valuable commodity to a business whether they are employed or own their practice. A recent study published in the JAANP reveals that many NPs know little about the value they bring to a practice. Business education is simply not taught in school. We learn it through the school of hard knocks and if we are lucky, from great mentors. A nurse practitioner who understands their value and can leverage it will be more successful in their career.

Lynn Rapsilber, DNP, ANP-BC, APRN, FAANP (Diploma in Nursing ‘81 St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing, BSN ’91 University of Connecticut, MSN ’98 University of Connecticut) graduated with a Doctorate in Nursing Leadership from Quinnipiac University, May 2016. She received the Benjamin and Juliette Trewin Award for Professional Leadership in Nursing. The University of Connecticut School of Nursing recognized Dr. Rapsilber as a 75 Difference Maker. Dr. Rapsilber owns NP Business Consultants, LLC, which disseminates information regarding reimbursement for nurse practitioners and other health care provider services. She is recognized as an expert on coding and documentation for APRNs and has presented at local, state, and national forums. She is also an author and educator of NP students and seasoned NPs. Dr. Rapsilber is the co-founder and CEO of the National Nurse Practitioner Entrepreneur Network (NNPEN). This organization focuses on providing essential business education to nurse practitioners (NPs), an area often lacking in their formal education and training. NNPEN offers educational resources, support, and partnerships with individuals who understand the unique challenges faced by NPs. By integrating the nursing model of care delivery, we empower NPs to identify issues and develop solutions within their communities. NNPEN is building a network of Nurse Practitioner Entrepreneurs (NPEs), transforming healthcare one practice at a time. Dr. Rapsilber also serves as the Chair of the Connecticut Coalition of Advanced Practice Nurses. Under her leadership, full practice authority for APRNs in Connecticut was attained with passage of Public Act 14-12. She is the former Connecticut State Representative and current Health Policy Chair for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She was bestowed induction as a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She owns NP Wellness Care, LLC, which provides Hepatitis C treatments at residential and addiction treatment centers
